ACII - Advice for Authors
Advice for Authors
ACI International - Journal of the WAO - publishes four main categories of research and clinical papers: Clinical Trends, Research Trends, Clinical Case Reports, and Research Notes.
  • Clinical Trends, Research Trends: Review and original articles on current clinical or research topics in allergy and clinical immunology. The text should consist of approximately 3,000 to 4,000 words, up to 6 figures and tables, and up to approximately 30 references
  • Clinical Case Reports, Research Notes: Case reports, descriptions of new drugs or side effects of therapy, practical tips, new diagnostic procedures, topical research abstracts, etc. Text should be limited to approximately 600 words; 1 or 2 tables and figures and up to 10 references may be included.

In addition to these clinical and research papers, the journal also publishes:

  • Forum: Letters to the editor, critical commentaries, and personal statements. Text should not exceed 600 words.
  • WAO Horizons: News and reports of past and forthcoming meetings, reports from societies around the world, along with short notes about prizes and special events.

General

  • Two complete copies of the manuscript and of all figures, along with a computer disk, must be submitted to the Managing Editor at the Publisher's address given below (or, if agreed in advance, to the Editor in Chief or one of the Associate Editors in Chief).
  • Clinical and Research Trends papers should make about 4-5 printed pages. This is equivalent to approximately 3000 to 4000 words, plus up to 6 figures or tables.
  • Clinical Case Reports & Research Notes should make about 1-2 printed pages. This is equivalent to approximately 600-1000 words, plus 1 or 2 figures or tables.
  • The entire manuscript, including an abstract, references, figure legends, and tables, should be typed double spaced on standard letter size paper (A4 21 x 29.7 cm or 8 1/2 x 11 inches) with a margin of about 2.5 cm or 1 inch at the top, bottom, right, and left of every page. This provides about 30 lines per page with approximately 60 characters each.
  • Please number all pages sequentially.

Specific Items

  1. The title page should include the following:
    • Suggested category of publication (Research or Clinical Trends, Clinical Case Reports, Research Notes).
    • Full title of the article
    • Authors' full names (first name, middle initial(s), surname) on a separate line
    • An abstract (see below)
    • Authors' affiliations, including full postal address, telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail of the corresponding author in a separate paragraph, arranged as follows:

Professor John Smith, MD (to whom correspondence should be addressed) is with the Department of Allergology, State University Medical School, 123 Main Street, Newtown, MD 20012, USA (tel. +1 234 567-8901, fax +1 234 567-8901, e-mail jsmith@sumd.ac). Jane Jones, PhD is with the National Allergy Institute, 23 High Street, Birmingham B1A 2AB, UK.

  2. Abstract: The abstract is the author's summary that appears at the beginning of the article. For Clinical Trends and Research Trends, it is to be structured under the headings Background, Methods/Data Base, Results, and Conclusions. The opening sentence should indicate the subject of the investigation. The abstract should emphasise any new information that the article contains, and indicate its relevance. It should give the generic names of any compounds mentioned. For experimental results, the abstract should indicate the method used; for new methods, the basic principle should be given. The abstract should be intelligible in itself without reference to the article and should not exceed 250 words. For Research Notes and Clinical Case Reports, the abstract should not exceed 150 words; it need not be structured.

  3. Headings: Please use up to two levels of headings to divide the paper into logical sections.

  4. References should be numbered in the order of their citation in the text. All references cited in the text must be in the reference list, and all references in the list must be cited in the text. Reference numbers should be cited in the text in square brackets [ ]. The reference list (which should not include more than 30 references) should be typed double spaced. The entries should include all authors' names, and should be styled as follows, with minimum punctuation:

[1] Krensky AM, Sanchez-Madrid F, Robbins E, Nagy JA, Springer JA, Burakoff SJ. The functional significance, distribution, and structure of LFA-1, LFA-2, and LFA-3: Cell surface antigens associated with target interactions. J Immunol 1983; 131:611-613
[2] Bousquet J, Chanez P, Campbell AM, Enander I, Godard P, Michel, FB. Monitoring of inflammatory cells in asthma. In T Miyamoto, M Okuda (Eds) Progress in allergy and clinical immunology, vol. 2, Kyoto. Seattle: Hogrefe & Huber, 1992, p. 203-205
[3] Centner J, de Weck AL. Atlas of immuno-allergology. Seattle: Hogrefe & Huber, 1995

Only papers that have been accepted for publication should be included in the reference list. Manuscripts in preparation, unpublished observations, and personal communications should only be cited in the text, and must be substantiated by a letter of permission.

  5. Footnotes should be avoided. Acknowledgments of financial or other support should be included immediately after the reference list.

  6. Tables with a short title, legends, and footnotes should be typed double spaced on separate pages. Tables must be numbered (1, 2, 3, etc.) in the order in which they are cited in the text.

  7. Figures. Color figures are encouraged. Two copies of each figure should be submitted. All figures must be in camera-ready format suitable for direct reproduction. Photographs should be provided as either high-contrast glossy prints or as slides. Line drawings should be provided as glossy prints or as original artwork. If figures were prepared using a computer, please also send figures on disk, indicating the program which was used to create them. If you submit original artwork that will have to be reduced in size for publication, please ensure that the labels on the figure will still be legible after reduction and that lines will not break up. Figures must be numbered (1, 2, 3, etc.) in the order in which they are cited in the text, and should be carefully marked on the reverse side with figure number, first author's name, and orientation (top).

  8. Figure legends should be typed on a separate page. They should be as concise as possible and be clearly identified as belonging to a particular illustration.

  9. Computer disks. Please submit a copy of the computer disk together with your manuscript. The label of the diskette should indicate the title of the paper, the first author's name, and the software and hardware used. Diskettes should be in either PC/DOS or Apple Macintosh format, preferably 3 1/2 inch (1.4 MB). The data should be saved in a pure text format (ASCII) as well as in the format of the word processing program used to prepare the manuscript. Please mark on the enclosed printout special characters that are not covered by ASCII codes.

  10. Online Rights for Journal Articles
Authors of articles in journals published by the Hogrefe Group may post a copy of the final accepted manuscript for non-commercial purposes, as a word-processor, PDF, or other type of file, on their personal web page or on their employer's website after it has been accepted for publication. The following conditions apply:
    1. Only the final draft manuscript post-refereeing shall be used for this purpose, not the published version, and this final draft manuscript may only be posted 12 months after the article has been published.
    2. The posted version of the article must carry the publisher’s copyright notice in the form “[Journal Title], [Volume No.] , [Issue No.], © [Year] by [Publisher’s name]”, (as it appears in the published journal/article) and a link to the publisher’s journal home page must be included.
    3. Further, the posted article must include the following statement: “This article does not exactly replicate the final version published in the journal “[Add title of Journal]”. It is not a copy of the original published article and is not suitable for citation. ”
The publisher does not permit archiving in any repositories other than the publisher’s own.
The publisher cannot provide electronic copies of the published version of the article for posting. Creation of an electronic or digital copy of the published version of the article for the purposes of posting or distributing it is not permitted.
